"Cool," said Daniel as they stepped inside the dingy humid room. A line of machines rumbled and spun, but behind them were the freshly laundered clothes, neatly folded in piles or hung up on a rack. Most of the them were surgeon's scrubs. Nigel rummaged for something to cover his thin ass and Daniel gleefully pulled out a white doctor's coat.
"I always wanted one of these," he said, shrugging off his own coat and pulling it on. He transferred his stash of cigarettes into various other pockets, pausing to light a new one on the way. There was a stethoscope hanging on the rack and he draped that around his neck too.
He inspected his badge. It said Dr. Phyllis Edgemain. Oh yeah! Close enough. "Are we in disguise?" he asked.

"So, ugh. Who's our Doctor Eggman?" Daniel asked, following along behind Nigel.
"You don't want to know." Nigel replied, shivering slightly at the memory of the various times he had met with some of the doctors in this facility. Matt and Val were unpleasant and could be nasty if they felt the need for it, but Doctor Totmacher was just plain creepy. They all seemed to get off on inflicting as much pain as possible just to carry out their experiments. "Let's hope that you never have to meet them. And if you see anyone with a syringe, run as fast and as far as you can."
Once inside the Laundry room, Nigel had his choice of several dozen plain white patient garments or some of the more colourful surgeon's scrubs. He selected a pair that seemed to be the right size and slipped them on. Pink with black leopard print. He couldn't remember any of the nurses ever wearing something like this. The trousers were small enough to tie up at his slender waist without falling to the ground, but also baggy enough to allow room for the collar which an orderly had mistakenly attached to his thigh instead of his neck a few months back while he was invisible. The shirt had a small pocket for his glasses. It would do. It was certainly better than being naked and he was sure that Daniel would stop directing questions to his penis now.
"Are we in disguise?" Daniel asked, looking almost professional with the lab coat and stethoscope.
Nigel hadn't thought about it before, but pretending to be hospital staff just might be the perfect way to stay safe while trying to work out the best escape plan.
Yes, we are Dr. Edgemain," Nigel chuckled. "Would you like to meet some of the other patients? I know where most of them are kept."

"Yes, we are Dr. Edgemain," Nigel chuckled. "Would you like to meet some of the other patients? I know where most of them are kept."
"Right on," said Daniel, who was listening to his own heart beat through the stethoscope. "I always thought that vampires were dead. No heartbeat." He stubbed out his cigarette and rummaged his pockets for a new one. He'd been chain-smoking since he entered the hospital and hadn't triggered a single smoke alarm. He might be in love.
"Then I met the Russian. He had a heart beat, but didn't have a heart." A memory surged. Armand's smooth face and fathomless gaze. An empty packet of cigarettes. Armand had made him smoke them all, watching silently. Then he had taken each in turn from Daniel's mouth and put it out; some crushed in the ashtray, some on Daniel's chest. He shivered and turned back to Nigel.
"What's the plan?"

Nigel had no idea who the Russian was. His new friend was certainly an odd one, but he was just glad to have someone to talk to. The conversation didn't need to make sense.
"Some of the vampires here don't have heartbeats, or so I've heard." Nigel explained. "I don't get out much, but I often hear the doctors, nurses and orderlies talking about the other patients. I've been here for almost as long as I can remember, but I still haven't met them all. Not sure I want to."
"What's the plan?" Daniel questioned while pressing the stethoscope to Nigel's chest.
"Block D," Nigel replied. "Some of the patients there have been here as long as I have. If we're making a break for it, I think we should take some of them with us."
Nigel tucked a lab coat, pair of scrubs and an orderly uniform under his arm, before heading out of the laundry room in the direction of Block D.
