It was no time like the present to get Andrew settled in. Creepy laughing could be heard as they walked down the dark hall. Cell block C seemed to be active and Jack didn’t have time to mess around. It was scary as hell down here and Jack was nervous. “I lost my virginity in a pumpkin patch on Halloween.” Ole Jack blurted out. Then there was a startling scream. He saw a pair of red glowing eyes in the first cell. Oh he learned long ago that not all vampires were the same.
He removed the remote from his belt and showed Andrew how to operate it. Nothing like on the job training.
“Ye point it at the patient’s collar to turn it on, sorta like turning a tv on. Then ye have these buttons and depending on their behavior ye select one. This one is for shock, this one for choking and this one will explode their head off.”
He let Andrew practice for a bit. “Just don’t explode it’s head, that’s for when they try to attack. The janitors cuss up and down when I create such a mess.” He chuckled.
While Andrew practiced Jack took out a syringe and filled it with the serum.

Doctor Totmacher closed the peephole. The fresh-faced Junger seemed far more educated than the usual dregs he might expect. He felt an uncharacteristic surge of excitement. He shuffled along the corridor that sat parallel to the cells and rounded the corner.
The new man was staring uneasily at the remote control he'd been handed while that surly Jack filled a syringe. The doctor's creeping steps were masked by the sound of screaming that reverberated around the block.
He rested one dry hand on Jack's. The man exuded a scent that was not unlike spoiled anatomical specimens. "Carefully, carefully," he said. "Treat it like a lover, ja?"
Then he turned to the newcomer. "Guten Abend." His smile was tight-lipped beneath his small expressionless eyes. He made a slight bow, exposing the blue-tipped electrode that was bored into his skull. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am known as Doctor Totmacher." His smile faded. "Why are you here?"

“I lost my virginity in a pumpkin patch on Halloween.” Jack blurted out as they wandered down the corridors of Cell Block C. Andrew had no idea how he was supposed to respond to that so he coughed instead. The awkward sound seemed to startle something in one of the dark cells and it let out a loud shriek.
The corridor smelled of urine and old blood and it was too dark to see inside most of the cells. Andrew wondered if each of them housed a vampire, but he didn't want to get too close. Jack had explained that the medication made them harmless and almost human-like, but Andrew couldn't be sure which one of them had been given their meds. He knew that some vampires had the ability to get into your head and make you do things against your will and he wanted no part of that. Best to keep a safe distance.
He inspected the remote control Jack offered and hesitantly aimed it at the red-eyed creature they had passed in the first cell. Carefully he pressed the shock button and the creature screamed and flailed, throwing itself against the cell bars. Well, that could certainly come in handy against these blood-thirsty bastards. Part of him wanted to press that third button just to have the pleasure of watching the vampires head explode, but he thought better of it. Killing a patient on his first day was probably a bad idea.
Andrew watched as Jack filled a large syringe from a vial he had in a little compartment on his belt.
Just then, a small, elderly man appeared as if from no where.
"Allow me to introduce myself. I am known as Doctor Totmacher." He had a heavy German accent and when he bowed in greeting, Andrew could see that section of his skull was missing. A small electrode poked out from between white hair which was far too thin to hide the brain beneath it. "Why are you here?"
Andrew took a few cautious steps backward. The Doctor's appearance was more than a little unsettling. His hand closed reflexively around the remote and there was a loud bang from the first cell, followed by a splatter of gore exploding in every direction. Andrew handed the remote back to Jack and wiped his bloody face with the sleeve of his white lab coat.
He looked back to Doctor Totmacher, who now had something slimy and fibrous clinging to one shoulder.
"Shit, I'm sorry." He offered a hand in greeting. "I'm Dr. Andrew Moore, sir. At your service."

Jack let out a short chuckle as he heard Andrew give a shock to the vampire. He knew the young lad would catch on quick.
Involuntarily, his muscles tensed when he felt a touch on his hand. His mouth fell slack as his gaze crawled from a hand touching him, up the arm and to a face. He gulped audibly. His eyes grew wide. He was having a horror movie moment. "Carefully, carefully." He heard the man with the exposed brains say. "Treat it like a lover, ja?"
A lover? Like Captain Brains ever clapped anyone's cheeks before? With that ugly mug?
“Aye. I will.” Jack responded.
He watched as Captain Brains attention focused upon Andrew. Naturally he felt protective.
"Guten Abend." He said in another language and bowed. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am known as Doctor Totmacher." His smile faded. "Why are you here?"
Jack then looked at Andrew who was clearly nervous and rightfully so. No one ever saw Doctor Totmacher but he’d heard stories. Rumors spread like wildfire within the asylum walls.
“Devil swallow me sideways!” Jack snapped in a hushed tone as he felt warm blood suddenly sprinkle across his face. Andy had hit the button that made the vampires head explode. He couldn’t blame the young lad. Hell, Jack himself had almost shite himself when he felt the touch of the mad scientist looking fella. He did not know if the wee old man was truly seeking to find out what they were doing or if this was some kind of entrapment for a new test subject. Jack took the remote from Andrew and he too wiped the blood off his face with a handkerchief he produced from his back pocket.
"Shit, I'm sorry." Andrew said to Dr. Totmacher. "I'm Dr. Andrew Moore, sir. At your service."
Jack too extended his hand in a formal greeting. “Tis a pleasure to finally meet ye, Doc Totmacher. People call me Ole Jack around here as you might or might not have already known. I was just showing our new orderly, Andrew here, how to administer discipline and medication to our patients at this fine establishment.” Ole Jack said with a grin, hoping none of that slime from the man's brain touched him.

Doctor Totmacher didn't flinch when the explosion sounded. The noise took him back a century, to to his glory days in the Sommes. British cannon had pounded the lines remorsefully. The German troops had been trapped in a quagmire of water and blood while the enemy had advanced, killing everything in their path. As the personal physician to Rupprecht, Crown Prince of Bavaria, Totmacher had withdrawn from the field early, but he had seen the great arc of the flamethrowers roasting land and bodies alike; he'd smelled the fresh stench of death as body parts rained from the sky.
He picked off the sliver of flesh that had landed on his shoulder and inspected it. He would know victory this time. Everything was proceeding as planned.
"Shit, I'm sorry." The young man stretched out his hand. "I'm Dr. Andrew Moore, sir. At your service."
Totmacher nodded in approval. Respect was his due. He tasted the fibrous flesh. "Vampire," he said, sagely, clasping Andrew's hand. "No matter. I'll have it scraped up and blended. The secrets are in the blood, ja? So we can use it alive or dead. Velcome aboard, Herr Moore."
“Tis a pleasure to finally meet ye, Doc Totmacher," said the orderly. Totmacher gazed up at him with lifeless eyes. "People call me Ole Jack around here as you might or might not have already known. I was just showing our new orderly, Andrew here, how to administer discipline and medication to our patients at this fine establishment.”
"An orderly?" Totmacher, looked between the two of them, settling on Andrew. "You said you vere a doctor, is this right? Richtig? Ve have need of doctors. Vhy are you taking an orderly's job? Are you a liar, Herr Moore?"
"Ole Jack..." He dropped the sliver of vampire flesh on top of half a pelvis, then brushed the gore from his fingers and sniffed. "Ja, I have seen your work. It is commendable, even for a creature of your..." He sniffed again. "Proclivities. Tell me, Jack. What would you do with the inmates in Block D?"
It was a test, of course. He drew out a pipe from his coat pocket. Whatever he was about to smoke, it wasn't tobacco. Block D was where the wretches were; the true unfortunates who had survived every round of testing and every drug trial that the facility offered, all without effect. They were the forgotten. They were the unmentionable. No-one liked to visit Block D. The inmates in Block D no longer screamed.

Andrew watched as Jack wiped the splatter of blood and brain matter from his face with a dirty handkerchief he pulled from his back pocket. He wasn't exactly clean when he finished, but had spread the blood around his face in a pattern that somewhat resembled war paint. it suited him.
Doctor Totmacher picked the slimy bit of organic matter from his shoulder and pressed it to his thin lips. Andrew recoiled slightly as a small pink tongue darted out to poke at the bit of gore. He really didn't want to know how the old man was able to identify what sort of supernatural creature the piece came from by flavour alone. How often did this guy go around tasting the captives? Andrew had heard things about vampire blood being more powerful that any drug and he could admit that he was curious, but he wasn't sure if he would take it quite that far. Out of habit, he slipped his hand into the pocket of his lab coat and closed it around the bottle of modafinil. He took some comfort in the knowledge that he was never without some sort of mind-altering substance. If life became to real, he could simply pop a few pills and check out for a while.
"You said you vere a doctor, is this right? Richtig? Ve have need of doctors. Vhy are you taking an orderly's job? Are you a liar, Herr Moore?" Totmacher questioned. His accent made him sound harsh and cold, but maybe that was just his personality.
"No, Sir..." Andrew swallowed hard. "I'm no liar. I was working as a resident at the Royal London Hospital just last month. My position there didn't exactly end well and jobs are hard to come by, so I'll take what I can get. There's no shame in working as an orderly. We're all part of the same team." Now Andrew was lying.
"I would be honoured if you might consider showing me some of the work you have done here, Doctor Totmacher."
