The Legacy These thirteen witches are the Mayfair Witches that controlled or were controlled by Lasher for 300 years. Suzanne called upon the evil spirit, not knowing what she was doing and upon her death, he became the willing spirit of Deborah. Lasher then appeared to each witch when they were babies and this is how he was handed down through the generations. Each witch handled her time and reign with Lasher differently. Some loved it and gained all they could from it, like Deborah and others suffered greatly from his presence, like Deidre. What they all did not know, was that they were all a part of his cunning plan to create a witch strong enough and powerful enough for him to pass through and become flesh ... the thirteenth witch. ~Suzanne Mayfair~ The first of the Mayfair witches and the mother of Deborah, she calls forth Lasher in the circle of stones at Donnelaith, Scotland. Known initially as Suzanne of the May Fair, she is a "clever woman" of the village who helps heal the sick. Dimwitted and peaceful, she is also quite beautiful and becomes pregnant during the May festival, where men can have village women freely. Her daughter Deborah, as a product of this, is known as a "merry-begot," and the villagers suspect that the childs father is the earl of Donnelaith himself. Suzanne was a midwife and well famed for her ability to heal and cure. A witch judge passing through the village went to Suzanne for a cut he had on his hand and then stayed the night. He told her to be careful of evil and showed her a book of black magic, 'Demonolgie' and read it to her as she could not read. He taught her the things witches had done and could do while constantly warning her to be careful, "lest the devil tempt you, for the devil loves the midwife and the cunning woman." Years later, with Deborah at her side, she went out into a field and called up a spirit, calling him 'Lasher' by name. Lasher brought her gold, told her secrets of treachery and he sought out to punish those who wronged against her. Suzanne quarrelled with a milkmaid and cursed her. Lasher took it upon himself to rain hail upon the milkmaid. Suzanne's lack of control over Lasher, allowed all to see her magic which eventually lead her to be burnt at the stake, in 1665 or, by some accounts, 1659, as her daughter is made to watch. ~Deborah Mayfair~ Deborah Mayfair (Comtess de Montcleve) Deborah was conceived during the May festival, and was called a "merry-begot". This and the fact that she may have been the daughter of the Earl were the reasons she wasn't burnt with her mother. She was raven-haired and had blue eyes. Petyr van Abel, a member of the Talamasca, was actually in Donnelaith when Suzanne was burnt. He rescued Deborah and took her to Amsterdam with Lasher following. Petyr wanted her to stay with the Talamasca, but Deborah saw them as evil and left. She married the artist Roelant. During that time, Lasher made her wealthy by bringing her gifts from all over the world. One day Deborah saw a beautiful emerald. With the wealth brought to her by Lasher, she purchased what became the Mayfair Emerald. When Roelant died, she married the Comte de Montcleve, from France. Before she left, she seduced Petyr. Charlotte was conceived at this time. While at Montcleve, Deborah, as well as giving birth to Charlotte, had two sons by the Comte, Chretien and Phillippe. Deborah became the village healer to the people in Montcleve. The Comte is later unfaithful to Deborah, and Lasher, believing Deborah would want revenge, caused him to have a fatal accident. When she was unable to save him, the Comte's mother accused Deborah of witchcraft. She is put on trail and found guilty. Petyr was actually traveling through Montcleve at that time, disguised as a Catholic priest studying witchcraft. They talk the night before her death. In her final moments, as she was led down to be burnt at the stake, she summoned down Lasher, "Come now, my Lasher, be my avenger, strike down my enemies!" "I see you, Lasher, I know you! I call you!" "Destroy my sons, destroy my accusers! Destroy those who have come to see me die!" Lasher destroyed the village and killed almost everyone, but not before Louvier pushed her from the church window and she fell to her death and then was finally burnt. The storm killed the Comte's mother and Deborah's two sons. Lasher, in a rage, went back to Donnelaith and caused a fire that killed the Earl and all his family. ~Charlotte Mayfair~ Charlotte Fontenay, wife of Antoine Fontenay. She was ordered to flee by Deborah, when she was arrested for witchcraft so that she would survive. Charlotte, Antoine and their son went to Saint-Domingue, in the care of merchant Jean-Jacques, Toussaint, Port-au-Prince. Antoine's family purchased a plantation there and it was name 'Maye Faire'. Charlotte ruled and ran the plantation, she was looked up to and respected by everyone, even her slaves, who thought her to be a witch, but this was in respect and awe on account of her healing powers. Charlotte is described as very rich, very beautiful and very fair with flowing flaxen locks and bewitching blue eyes. Her husband is deeply crippled by an illness his father possesses which has caused a progressive weakness in his limbs. When Petyr van Abel came to see her at 'Maye Faire', she imprisoned him in a cabin on the cliff face on her property. She intended on keeping there until she conceived as she wanted children without her husband's disease, even though she knew Petyr to be her father. After conceiving, she allowed Petyr to leave, even though she wanted him to stay, she loved him as deeply as he loved her. She forbid Lasher to do any harm to Petyr, which was ignored. When Petyr's body was found, she went to Port-au-Prince and identified him, and then 'took to bed' in her grief for the man she loved. Nine months after the death of Petyr, she gave birth to twins, Jeanne Louise and Peter. Charlotte lived to be almost 76years old, dying in 1743. She had five children and seventeen grandchildren. The night Charlotte died, a fierce storm surrounded Maye Faire until morning, when one of Jeanne Louise's sons was found dead.

~Jeanne Louise Mayfair~ Charlotte's Daughter with Petyr van Abel, she lives at Maye Faire as the designee of the legacy .Born in 1690, she is strong, and beautiful, with light brown hair and pale eyes. Jeanne Louise, married a dissolute drunk. She is the first to retain the name Mayfair after she marries and used the name Mayfair for all her official documents. Peter, her twin, was her lifetime companion, the father of her fifth and favoured child, daughter Angelique, born 1725. To her husband, she had four sons. By the time of Angelique's birth, he had gone mad and was confined to the same cabin on the cliff edge that Petyr had been. Not long after she married, connecting bedroom and parlour extentions were added to her rooms for Peter, who never married. Jeanne Louise was described as being an exceptionally beautiful woman, much admired and sought after and welded the same power over the plantation and people as her mother before her. She died in 1771, just a few hours after her brother. ~Angelique Mayfair~ Born in 1725 to Jeanne Louise Mayfair in Saint-Domingue, she becomes one of the thirteen Mayfair witches and a designee of the legacy. Jeanne Louise's twin brother, Peter, is her father, so she is the product of double incest, since her mother was born of the union between Charlotte and Charlotte's father, Petyr van Abel.Angelique married the handsome and rich, Vincent St Christophe in 1755. As her mother before her, she retained Mayfair as her name. Caring and devoted to her grandmother, she stayed with Charlotte until she died. Five years after marriage, she gave birth to Marie Claudette, she also had another two girls that died early, three sons, two who emigrated to France and Lestan, who followed Marie Claudette when she moved to Louisiana, six children in total. Angelique, even though thought not to be as attractive as Jeanne Louise or her daughter, Marie Claudette, was considered a beauty in her prime with her small features and smaller eyes and very dark and curly hair. Her husband was a sweet, gentle soul, he would sit by a lake on the property made for him and make up songs and then later, sing them to her. After his death, she took many lovers but refused to re marry. One of her brother's and sister emigrated to France, while her other brother Maurice, remained at home, with his two sons, Louis-Pierre and Martin. ~Marie Claudette Mayfair~ Marie Claudette, born 1760, married Henri Marie Landry. She was warned by her slaves just days before the Haitian revolution, that she and her family might be massacred. So Marie Claire, her husband, children, her brother and his famly and 50 slaves moved to Louisiana, making her the first Mayfair Witch to move from Saint-Domingue, since they settled there. She was exceptionally beautiful with very dark hair and blue eyes, extremely small and delicate. She established the Mayfair Legacy in 1789 just before the revolution that forced the family to leave Saint-Domingue. When settled in Louisiana, she enhanced and refined the legacy and shifted a large portion of her money from banks in Holland and Rome to banks in London and New York. She had three children, Claire Marie, Pierre and Marguerite. Claire Marie, being the first born daughter, was made beneficary of the legacy until it was changed over to Marguerite. The move to Louisiana put the Mayfairs in contact with more people than ever before and made them more visible as opposed to the power and isolation of Saint-Domingue. The people of Louisiana were suspicious of Marie Claudette, they said she ws formidable and unpleasant. Her slaves said she was a sorceress and it was said she had a demon whom she could send after anyone who crossed her. They eventually moved to New Orleans and moved into a large house in the Rue Dumaine and immediately acquired an enormous plantation at Riverbend, south of the city. They built a plantation house larger and more luxurious then the one at 'Maye Faire.' This plantation was called 'La Victoire at Riverbend' and later known simply as 'Riverbend', In 1896, the house was carried away by the river, but the Mayfairs still own most of the land there which is the site of an oil refinery. In 1799, she gave birth to her last child, Marguerite who lived in Marie Claudette's shadow until her death in 1831. Claire Marie was said to be feeble minded and was never allowed to marry due to her behaviour. In her old age, Marie Claudette slept with Claire Marie to watch over her. Marie Claudette's only son, Pierre, also was not allowed to marry, he was a doctor to the slaves. In 1820, he took a quadroon mistress, they had a son and a daughter. Henri, in true Mayfair male fashion, left the running of everything to his wife. He spent his time reading botanical journals from Europe and collecting rare flowers. He designed and cultivated an enormous garden at Riverbend. He died in bed in 1824 after receiving the sacreaments. ~Marguerite Mayfair~ The seventh of the Mayfair witches since Suzanne, she is Marie Claudette's daughter and the mother of Katherine, Julien and Remy. Born in 1799, she is the third of Marie Claudette's children. Everyone in the family adored Marguerite. She had her portrait painted wearing the Emerald necklace when she was ten. The picture hung on the wall in the First Street house in New Orleans from 1927. She was a delicate child with dark hair and large slightly upturned black eyes. Considered a beauty, her nurses called her 'La Petite Gypsy.' She had a fiercy temper and a violent and unpredictable sense of humour. She married Tyronne Clifford McNamara when she was twenty, against the wishes of Marie Claudette. He was a handsome opera singer that toured around the United States. In 1827 and 1828, she gave birth to Remy and Julien. Tyronne was famous for his womanising, drinking and getting into brawls. In 1829, Tyronne and an Irishwoman, presumably his mistress, were found dead after a fire in the French Quarter. It is said that Marguerite sent her devil to take care of the two and that she knew more about Voodoo than any black person in Louisiana. In her late twenties, Marguerite had become a gaunt and somewhat frightening figure, with unkempt hair, glowing dark eyes and disconcerning laughter, always wearing the Emerald necklace. At Riverbend, she had a study full of horrible and disgusting things such as human skulls, stuffed and mounted swamp animals, trophy heads from African safaris and animal skin rugs. There was also many bottles and jars with many people claiming to have seen body parts in them. During this time, there were many sightings of Lasher accompaning Marguerite, he was thought to be her lover or companion. People were puzzled as to who he was and how he came and went saying, 'Now you see him, now you don't'. This was the first time Lasher had been spoken of in such a way in over one hundred years. Marguerite re married almost immediately after Tyronne's death to Arlington Kerr, who vanished six months later. It is rumoured that Arlington was murdered and ended up in a collection of Marguerite's jars. Before his disappearance, Marguerite conceived, giving birth to Katherine in 1830. Marguerite, described as a 'hag' at forty, spent the last of her decades in a library of horrible and disgustuinng things, talking to herself out loud and conversing at length with her reflcection and plants. Marguerite dies in 1891, at the advanced age of ninety-two.

~Katherine Mayfair~ Born in 1830 and fathered by Arlinton Kerr, she is Marguerite's third child and eighth witch of the legacy. In 1857, Katherine, age 17 and her brothers bought a peice of property on First Street in the Garden District. Darcy Monahan, an Irish architect was hired to build a house there, this is the current Mayfair home today. Katherine and Darcy fell deeply in love. Julien was insanely jealous of his sister and would not permit her to marry so young. She apparently stole away with Darcy in the unfinished house at First Street, where they pledged their fealty in roofless rooms and the wild unfinished garden. After threatening to runaway, they were permitted to marry. They moved in the house on First Street in 1858 and gave many balls which people loved to attend. Katherine gave birth to Clay in 1859, then another three children who all died in babyhood. In 1865, she gave birth to Vincent, then another two children that also died in babyhood. It is said the losses broke her heart and she saw it as a judgement from God. She changed from the gay, high-spirited girl to a diffident and confused woman. In 1871, Darcy died of Yellow Fever, Katherine was broken hearted and half mad. She called for Julien to come to her and he did, setting foot in First Street for the first time since completion. Julien moved into First Street and into the master bedroom. Katherine was so taken with grief for her husband and babies, that she tried twice to take her life through poison. Eventually, Julien moved Katherine and her sons back to Riverbend, where in 1872, she gave birth to Mary Beth. 10.5 months after Darcy died. In 1872, she was described as still pretty, even though she was prematurely gray. When in old age, she was forced against her will to live back at First Street. Her mind became unsettled and she would dress in black and wander the garden's in search of Darcy. Katherine is seen as the less significant of the witches to date. She was 'broken' by Darcy's death and became sweet, gentle and patient. She never took part in the running of Riverbend in her lifetime. In the late 1880's, Katherine was described as gray-haired and worn and had become a strict Catholic, going to Mass daily. Katherine was the first witch that the slaves were not afraid of, had no occult stories and there were no sightings of Lasher with her. It is thought that Julien was the witch of this era. It is speculated that Katherine was a natural medium, but rejected her role when she fell in love with Darcy. The Talamasca considers her to be the weakest and least significant of the Myfair witches. ~Mary Beth Mayfair~ Mary Beth and her husband. Born to Katherine Mayfair in 1872, baptised and registered as Darcy Monahan's daughter even though she was born 10.5 months after his death, thus making her Julien's daughter and the first child of incest in the family since Jeanne Louise and Peter produced Angelique in 1690.She is the ninth witch in the succession of witches chosen as heirs of the legacy, and, until Rowan, the Talamasca consider her to be the most powerful Mayfair witch of all time.Julien bestowed all upon Mary Beth, all she could possibly desire, balls at First Street that rivalled any private entertainment in New Orleans. The garden walks, balustrades and fountains at First Street were all designed and laid out for her 15th birthday. At 15, she was tall and in photographs she appeared stately, serious and darkly beautiful with large black eyes with very clearly defined and beautiful eyebrows. It was said she looked more like Marguerite than Katherine. In 1887, Julien took her to New York and then to Europe in 1888, staying for 1.5 years. In this time, New Orleans was informed by letters to friends and family that she had "married a Scottish Mayfair - an Old World Cousin" and given birth to a baby girl - Belle. The mysterious husband died from a fall from his tower two months before the birth of Belle. Her husband, Lord Mayfair, was fictitious, they never visited Scotland. They did spend some time in Edinburgh and visted Donnelaith and purchased the castle on the hill that Petyr van Abel described in detail - the castle had been an abandoned ruin since the late 1690's. There is no record anywhere in Scotland of any Lord or Lord's Mayfair. They returned in 1889. Mary Beth, Belle and Julien all lived together at First Street. Mary Beth loved to dance, go to parties and theatre but showed no interest in wanting another husband. Her daugher, Belle, is considered too feeble-minded to be made the legacy's designee. It is erroneously beleived that Julien is Belle's father. Later Julien does father a child with Mary Beth, one who becomes the next witch, Stella. Mary Beth eentually marries Daniel McIntyre and has two children by him, Carlotta and Lionel. On September 11, 1925, she dies of cancer at age fifty-four. ~Stella Mayfair~ Mary Beth's daughter with Julien, she is the tenth witch of the Mayfair legacy. Born in 1901, after Carlotta and before Lionel. she is a delightful and beguiling child who loves telling ghost stories. Changeable and restless, she lives scandalously as she grows up: drinking, dancing, dressing flamboyantly. She embodies the very spirit of the Roaring Twenties. Though the nuns at the schools she attended were fond of Stella, she was constantly expelled. It was said she would frighten other students, read their minds, flung people about without touching them and would laugh at what the nuns said if she thought it to be a blantant lie. Stella was the most carefree, most flamboyant, most dating and only Mayfair entirely bent on having fun, she did not care about the money, as long as she could do her 'own thing'. For 8 years, she lived life as a young reckless southern belle, not concerned with buisness, thoughts of marriage or the future. When Mary Beth fell ill, Stella stopped all her fun and took care of her mother. After her father had also died, Stella went wild, throwing scandalous parties at First Street. Eventually the parties were just for friends and family were forgotten and ignored. In 1921, Stella becomes pregnant. People suspect Stella's brother Lionel of being the father but Julien later confesses the he, in fact, was the father. In 1927, Stella spent a fortune refurbishing First Street. New paint, plaster, draperies and expensive furniture. An elevator was installed and a huge pool in the rear garden with a cabana so that guests could shower and dress without coming into the house. In 1929, Stella was contacted by the Talamasca. Firstly by Stuart Townsend, he disappeared shortly after their meeting and then by Arthur Langtry. Stella told Arthur that she wanted to get away and go with him to the Talamasca Motherhouse in London. As she left to get her things to leave with him, Lionel walked up and shot her twice in front of a house full of guests and little Antha, the next designee of the legacy. She was once compared to Clara Bow by Aaron Lightner. ~Antha Mayfair~ Antha Marie Mayfair, born 1921, was the only child of Stella. She was described as being a shy, thin, nervous girl with a dreamy expression who was subject to fever and chills. She could and would have Lasher appear to her anytime she wanted. This got her expelled from several Catholic schools as the nun's were afraid of her invisible friend. At the age of 8 years, she witnessed her Uncle Lionel shoot her mother in the head and was then raised by her Aunt, Carlotta, even though she never had custody of her. At 17 years, she ran away to New York and supported herself by selling rare gold coins. Then she met Sean Lacy, an artist and married him. She became a writer and sold a poem the The New Yorker and one to a Parisian magazine. After falling pregnant, Sean was died in a car accident, and she became hysterical. Carlotta had finally won custody of Antha and committed her to St. Ann's Asylum. Not long after, she recovered and realized that she had inherited the legacy and started to write again. She gave birth to her only child, Dierdre. Carlotta through frustration, tried to make Antha blind so she could no longer see Lasher and give him power. She pushed Antha out of the third-floor window to her death and then told everyone that Antha was insane and had jumped.

~Deirdre Mayfair~ Deirdre, only child of Antha. She had black hair, blue eyes, was active, rebellious and sensuous. She knew little of her mother who died when she was a baby and even less of her grandmother. She was raised by Carlotta to think that she was part of a long chain of evil in the family and that Lasher was the Devil. She thinks she is damned because the spirit brings her flowers, treats her gently and gives her sexual pleasure. Like her mother, she was expelled from several Catholic schools, finding that not even the priests can help her or believe her. At 13, she attempts to run away and attempts to commit suicide and fails at both. She is then sent to family in Los Angeles. Her stay there doesn't last long with her talking of being cursed and her meetings in the backyard with Lasher. At 17, she attends Texas Women's University and is happy. She meets Aaron Lightner from the Talamasca here and much to his surprise, she knows who he is. She tells him that she doesn't want to know anything he knows of the family and that she believes the Talamasca feed Lasher with their attention. She herself wants to give him no attention and wants a normal life and tries to give Aaron the Mayfair emerald. He tells her that he believes Lasher will kill him if he takes it and so she throws it into the swamp. When Deirdre falls pregnant, the family believe it is a professor that was killed in a car after leaving his wife to marry Deirdre. This mans seems to not exist and the father of the baby is likely to be Cortland, her uncle, who was visiting her frequently. Carlotta is so desperate to break the chain of evil that she insists the baby is given up for adoption to cousins in California. This maddens Deirdre and she calls for Cortlands help to stop Carlotta from doing this. Cortland falls down the First Street steps and baby Rowan is successfully taken away. Then for the next 17 years, Deirdre is institutionalised by Carlotta and given daily shock treatments and high doses of Thorazine. In 1976, she returns to First Street catatonic and sits on her porch daily in a mental blank. At age 48 years, she finally dies and Rowan is informed and returns to New Orleans for the first time since she was born. ~Rowan Mayfair~ Born November 7, 1959, Rowan is Deirdre Mayfair's daughter by Cortland. She is the thirteenth witch in the line of Mayfair witches that Lasher chooses to try to realize his ambition to transform from spirit to flesh. She represents the fulfillment of her ancestors’ most powerful genetic traits and paranormal abilities. Carlotta immediately took Rowan from her mother, Deirdre, and gave her to Ellie Mayfair and Graham Franklin to adopt. It was Carlotta’s intention to break Lasher’s hold on the family and end the chain of evil; she had tried and failed to accomplish this with Deirdre. Carlotta makes Ellie promise never to tell Rowan of her family heritage or allow her to return to New Orleans. Hence Rowan grows up knowing nothing of her mother or her ancestors, the Mayfair witches. The Talamasca, however, keeps track of her, debating whether they should give their lengthy Mayfair file. At the age of thirty, she is five-foot-ten-inches tall, with blond hair and gray eyes. Brilliant, aloof, and independent, she has many of Petyr van Abel’s traits, but resembles Julien the most, except for her coloring. She possesses an extra set of chromosomes that lie dormant, until Lasher activates them. As a neurosurgeon, she is well trained in medical practice and research and fully understands the nature of genetic mutation. Because she is so confident in her own abilities, Lasher easily seduces her into believing she can control him. ~Mona Mayfair~ Alicia Mayfair’s daughter and Ancient Evelyn’s great-granddaughter, she is the “twentyfold” Mayfair and a very powerful witch. Obsessed with family, race cars, guns, and computers, she shares many of Rice’s own interests. At the age of thirteen, she is a computer wizard and financial genius, and her two ambitions are to seduce all of the Mayfair men and to set up her own mutual fund. In love with the image of Ophelia from Hamlet, and being highly erotic she lost her virginity at the age of twelve: “I eradicated all traces of it.” Both of her parents are alcoholics, so she takes over as the responsible one in the family. Mona knows the complete history of the Mayfair witches and has figured out the lineage on her computer. Julien is her great-grandfather three times over. She has inherited the full complement of paranormal powers, including diagnostic sensitivities, and later she learns that she had a sixth finger, which was cut off when she was born. She nearly died as a result, but Evelyn had saved her. Mona has dreams of Julien beckoning her to First Street and encouraging her to seduce Michael Curry, whom Rowan has abandoned. She does sneak into First Street, but Michael resists her. However, later they are both drawn by music to a room downstairs that Julien has transformed into one from his era, and, hypnotized, they make love. Eventually Rowan recovers and Mona apologizes for seducing Michael. Before leaving for England to investigate the Talamasca, Rowan perceives that Mona is pregnant. She knows that it is Michael’s child and she feels that the three of them can work it out, should the child be normal. However, there is some danger that it might be a Taltos. Her cousin Mary Jane recognizes at once that Mona’s child is not normal. She learns what she can from Lasher’s writings, then takes Mona to the decrepit Fontevrault so that she can give birth safely and in secret. Morrigan soon emerges and Mona names her the heir to the Legacy. They all return to First Street, where Mona pleads with the newly arrived Michael and Rowan to accept Morrigan and not to hurt her. They reluctantly agree, but Mona remains afraid for her child. When the Taltos Ashlar arrives and takes Morrigan away. ~Morrigan Mayfair~ The daughter of Mona Mayfair and Michael Curry, she is a Taltos, created by the joining of two witches who possess the giant helix gene. The name is an Old English moniker, referring to the dark and terrible aspects of a war goddess in Irish myth who protected the Little People with fog and rain. Mona intuits the name from a dream she has while she is pregnant. Her pregnancy advances rapidly, and she attends to what she is hearing from the child inside her. At first she hears only whispers and humming, but soon she sings tunes that seem to create themselves. She can see her child Morrigan’s red hair and hear her voice. They talk together, which helps Morrigan to develop quickly and gain strength. Mona gives birth to Morrigan at Fontevrault. Morrigan possesses memories from many minds: Michael’s, Mona’s, Lasher’s, and even receives images of ceremonies of Stonehenge. Morrigan immediately takes to the computer to learn about her new status as a Mayfair. When Mona tells her she is the legacy designee and gives her the Mayfair emerald she sets about ensuring that everything required be done towards this end. Then she designates funds for the restoration of Fontevrault, he birthplace, and insists on returning to First Street. She is afraid of Michael and Rowan, but feels she must find out what they will do with her. When they arrive, Morrigan smells the scent of another Taltos on them, because they have just returned from Ashlar’s home in New York. Morrigan demands to know where he is, but they tell her she must allow them to disclose this when they feel the time is right. Furthermore, if she wants the family’s nurture and acceptance, then she must submit to their discipline. She reluctantly agrees, but when Ashlar’s gifts arrive for Rowan and Michael, she becomes extremely agitated. Ashlar himself arrives shortly thereafter, and when Morrigan sees him, she goes straight to him and they embrace. For him, she is the dawn of a new day after a very long and bitter night. They decide to go to Donnelaith together to complete the birth ritual. ~Julien Mayfair~ At 15 years old, he was running the plantation, "Riverbend" with Augustin, then eventually taking over completely. At his 18th birthday supper, he "accidently" shot his Uncle Augustin in the head with a new pistol. It is said they were wrestling with the gun and it accidently went off. Another story is that Julien challenged Augustin's honesty, at which point he threatened to blow his own brains out and Julien tried to stop him. No one was ever charged in any case. Throughout his lifetime, he remained the manager of Riverbend, even though it was Katherine who inherited it. He left the famly home at Riverbend after an enormous family squabble when he would not permit Katherine to marry Darcy Monahan. He moved into a flat in the French Quarter with a male companion, it was whispered that they were lovers. Julien was so angry about Katherine's marriage, that he would not visit her. At Riverbend, in 1863, Julien, Katherine and Darcy had a violent quarrel where Darcy begged Julien to accept him and to be affectionate and reasonable with his sister. In 1875, Julien married Suzette Mayfair, a descendant cousin. He loved her dearly, having commissioned no less than ten portraits of her in their first years of marriage. They had three sons and a daughter, Jeanette. They lived in First Street with Remy and his wife and children. It is speculated tht he and not Katherine was actually the witch of that era, making him the eight witch. As Marguerite grew older, Julien exhibited more power. Julien had black hair that turned completely white when he was still quite young. It is said that Julien strongly resembled his ancestors, Deborah Mayfair and Petyr van Abel, who in no way resembled each other. He is a combination of the two forebearers. It is said Julien handed out gold foreign coins as if they were copper. Into old age, he would often ride his chestnut mare up St Charles Ave to Carrolton and back, tossing coins to black children he passed. After his death, four stories were printed in the newspaper from witnesses saying they saw his ghost riding through the mist on St Charles Ave. Servants would often see Julien come out of one room to see him in another. Many servants quit as they could not cope with the "strange Monsieur Julien". It is speculated that it was Lasher and that they looked and dressed similiar. After Suzette died, Julien spent less time at Riverbend. His children were brought up entirely at First Street. Julien made a consideable wealth and left it to Mary Beth even though she was the designee of the Legacy. Suzette was an apparent disapointment to Julien and died young due to having four children so young. Jeanette was the only child of theirs with psychic abilites and it seems she could see Lasher much to her shock, constantly screaming and running from the house, she also died young. His sons, Barclay and Garland died in their sixties and Cortland at eighty years of age. Julien made an office at First Street in the library where he had bookcases built into the wall and they were stocked with many Mayfair records which had previously been kept at the plantation. Many of these books were very old and written in Latin. Katherine remained at the plantation during this time as she and Julien were often quarrelling, but Mary Beth always brought him back. He was always swooping down upon her with cartloads of gifts and stealing her away for weeks on end in New Orleans. Julien was 19 yrs old when his mother died. When she died, it began to rain and the wind was extremely strong, banging shutters and causing leaves to fall, which delighted Julien. He opened all the windows and let in the rain. With his eyes fall of tears, he kissed his mother, closed her eyes and took the doll from her and put it inside his coat. He eventually became miserable and knelt down and buried his face in the covers beside her. He had two main male lovers - a quadroom, Victor Gregoire and an Englishman, Richard Llewellyn. Victor was possibly a descendant from Peter Fontenay Mayfair, twin of Jeanne Louise Mayfair. Richard Llewellyn is the only observer of Julien ever personally interviewed by a member of the Talamasca. He has given some of the most intimate glimpses of the Mayfair's. His account can be found in "The Witching Hour" from page 504. Julien had a stroke in 1914 and died four months later. Julien fathered many children over the decades, through marriage and incest. He was one of the most powerful Mayfair witches and was part of Lasher's design to become flesh. Julien's line fathered the witches that would bring Lasher into the flesh and end his existance. His line also fathered a Taltos, Lasher's ultimate dream. You will see many lines crossed to produce the witches, not only from Julien, but also from his son, Cortland. He moved to California and furthered his education. After the death of his mother his life seemed empty. While at ocean Beach he swept off the rocks by a wave and drowns. Dying for an hour he is rescued and brought back to life by Rowan. He awakens with a sense of having had a vision through which he has gained a purpose, but cannot recall the details, only that he must return to New Orleans to accomplish some vague mission. He leaves for New Orlean despite the fact he has fallen in love with Rowan, where she too eventually turns up for the reading of her Mother Deirdre's will. They marry and renovate the first street house.
